    pearl, ham? what? how do these roots have anythng to do with the expression mumlety-peg?

    or do they at all? are we missing step or five?

      Sorry, Ludmilla, I was just free associating on the nickname Peg for Margaret / Marge / Pearl. The Latin word pernula 'pearl' is a diminutive form of perna which means either ham or seashell.
