Greek entomon 'insect', entomos 'cut (in two)'; Latin calque insectus. *tem- 'to cut' vs *sek- 'to cut' :- cf. Latin signum, Middle Irish tescaid 'he cuts, bites' ~ Latin æstumo (later æstimo) 'to value, rate, appraise, estimate', Welsh tam 'bite, piece'.
